"Estimated new cases (incidence) and deaths (mortality)
worldwide for 5 of the most common cancers, 2000"
Cancer is a major killer
There are over 22 million people suffering from the disease
worldwide and over 6 million deaths per year.
In many cases there are no effective treatments
Over the last 20 years there have been significant advances
in conventional treatments - surgery, radiotherapy, hormone
therapy and chemotherapy. Some progress is being made
in certain types of cancer, but for most, treatments are
relatively crude.
The need for new medicines
The challenge for the 21st century is to increase our
understanding of cancer in order to develop more selective
and effective treatments.
